10a – 1p: Short Row Wizardry

Experience: Beginners upwards.

Description: A practical look at short rows and their many applications to better tailor your knitting. Try unwrapped, wrapped and Japanese short rows and compare their merits. Short rows in garter stitch and their application to a practical, comfortable generic sock heel. Planning to improve fit and finish by planning your own shaping’s for bulgy bits.

Supplies: Light coloured DK/Sport weight yarn or thicker (giving a gauge of 4 - 6 st per inch) in two colours and at least two sets of 5 appropriately sized dpns, 3.5 - 4.5mm / US 4 - 7. Usual knitting tackle. A variety markers.

Homework: Using Light colored DK/Sport weight yarn or thicker (giving a gauge of 4 - 6 st per inch), and appropriately sized dpns, 3.5 - 4.5mm / US 4 - 7. Cut off yarn from each swatch, leave sts on a spare dp needle (ideally) or holder.

Swatch 1 - Cast on 20 sts. Knit 4 rows (garter st), then 2 rows stockinette, (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).

Swatch 2 - As Swatch 1.

Swatch 3 - Cast on 34 sts. Knit 4 rows (garter st), then 2 rows stockinette, (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).

Swatch 4 - As Swatch 1.

Swatch 5 - Cast on 24 sts. Knit 4 rows (garter st), then 2 rows stockinette, (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).

2p – 5p: Tassels, Trims and Tidbits

Experience: Beginners upwards.

Description: An action packed afternoon, stuffed with slightly unusual things to do with your yarn to create dazzling details in your work. Cool beginnings include, Scalloped, Picot and the Latvian Twist. Edgings include Petal and Lace Bobble trims. We’ll work Fur, Indian Cross and Yarn Misers’ stitches along with a bevy of beautiful ‘bind off’s. We’ll play with I-cord basics and dabble in more unusual forms. The whole to be bedizened with terrific tassels and Bolivian pompoms. 

Supplies Yarn - several solid colours in smooth, DK or Sport weight (approx 5 -6 sts/in) or thicker if you prefer. 2m/yds of a wickedly expensive, wildly fluffy yarn or just use your imagination. Set of 5 dpns in a size appropriate to your yarn. Crochet hook. (Pencil to use as a form - not to write with! Usual knitting tackle. Scotch tape and pencils provided)

. Homework:

Swatch A: Cast on 40 sts, knit 1 row. Leave sts on needle with yarn attached.

Swatch B: With Col A, cast on 32 sts. With Col B, knit 2 rows. With Col C, knit 2 rows. Cut off old cols and knot on new when changing yarns. Cut off Col C on completion; leave sts on a dpn or holder.
