15 March 2013 A Yen for Yarn: Q&A with the Glitter Knitter

With the ever-in natural-luxe mohair trend looming large, a talk and tea hosted last weekend by Mohair SA together with ‘Glitter Knitter’ Steven Berg in Port Elizabeth’s trendy Stanley Street, piqued our interest. Steven Berg and Be Sweet entrepreneur Nadine Curtis joined forces with Mohair SA for the event and were among the line-up of fascinating guest speakers. (more)

Business Best Practices: ‘Third Place’ concept reaps rewards

Note: Steven Berg, owner of StevenBe, Minneapolis, was a finalist in the 2012 TNNA Needlearts Business Innovation Awards program.

The program is a joint project of TNNA and Hart Business Research. "Third Place” refers to where people spend their time — home being the first and work being the second. When we opened StevenBe three years ago, we realized the importance of creating a "Third Place” for our clients. This would cause them to spend more time in our shop and see it as a rallying point for fiber arts, creative community, and social events. (more)

How do YOU ponchini?
November 18th, 2012 in the Twin Set Blog

Dear Jan,

I spent a lovely day at StevenBe’s yesterday, taking part in a charity hat knit-a-long and getting an education in how to wear Steven’s hot pattern, the Eyelet Ponchini. More

Yarn Garage Workshop: Making Chicago Avenue into "Art Street"
Steven Be wants Chicago Avenue to be known as Art Street. Just as Nicollet Avenue is known as Eat Street, he wants everyone to know that Chicago Avenue is where art is happening. ... (More)

Since returning from TNNA, I have heard many of my friends gloomily quote Clara's assessment of this summer's show. At TNNA, there had indeed been a lot of sparkly things. "Shiny" was afoot; there was glitz and glam enough to make the heart of StevenBe sing (I kinda love this guy). Yarn companies like Berocco and Trendsetter are introducing more trim-style yarns to knit into projects to make frilly edges, and adding sparkle to their standard wool yarns to sexy them up.... Email from Emily: "This past Saturday was delighted my daughter wanted to go to the yarn store with me....I had never been to StevenB's and boy was I in for a grand treat...I was speechless and could not get over the selection and the people were just plain marvelous......I picked up a skein of yarn and pattern book but the rest were treats for my hands and feet and they were so much fun and do they ever feel grand Thanks again for the fun trip and I will be back....I was in my own candy store ohhhhhhh fun yummy and so soft"

On our fiber extravaganza day together... ...my friend, Becky, and I took a trip to StevenBe's Yarn Garage Workshop... ...a LYS (local yarn shop) like no other! (more)

Great Article about StevenBe and Steven

There are certain people who emanate creative light---you know the sort I mean---each idea is more inventive than the last, their humor is infectious, filling the world with laughter, and the day is just a tad sunnier for having encountered them. Steven Berg is that guy for me. I met him at a TNNA trade show a few years back and have spoken to him only a few times since. He probably doesn't have a clue ...... More!

The Glitter Knitter's Mission: Inspire - From American Craft

BY KRISTEN POWELL

I learned to knit at a fabulous yarn shop nestled in Twin Cities suburb Rosemount - The Yarn Garage. Who can resist taking a class from someone nicknamed the Glitter Knitter? That's owner Steven Berg, who has since opened a second store near downtown Minneapolis. I haven't picked up knitting needles in a few years, but I decided to check out the new location, named Steven Be. ..... More

One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to the Yarn Garage, a progressive boutique-style yarn shop, housed in a converted firehouse, owned and operated by brother and sister team StevenBe (Berg) & Monika Oeltjen. If you ever stop by for a visit, you’ll see that Steven is truly a prolific visionary when it comes to the concept behind this uncommon shop.......... (More)

Rave review of StevenBe. See Crochetville Blog here.

The original LYS is Yarn Garage; the newer store in Minneapolis is Steven Be. Both stores are owned by Steven Berg, knitter and salesman extraordinaire. If the gorgeous yarns he stocks aren't enough to do it on their own, this man knows how to make you start handing him large sums of your money and make you happy that you're doing it! ......... More

"I'm about inspiration," Berg says, "and letting people-as classic as they may be, as traditional as they may become and experience a little hit of the magic, because you'll go home enthused about those traditional, classic projects that you are working on as well." It's a creative spirit that enables knitters, he believes. "If you have that true passion for this, you don't need to follow all the predesigned rules." For the complete article click here.

Published a member profile of Steven Berg, "Q. How did you first become interested in the needlearts? Did you have a mentor?

My interest in fiber arts started early at the age of 4 by mimicking my mother as she knitted. Finally, I was given some worsted and Canadian needles from Mary Maxim and began a life-long journey.
